Biography
Ivan Gašparovič was born on March 27, 1941, in Poltár, then part of the Slovak region of Czechoslovakia. He studied law at Comenius University in Bratislava, a leading school in the country, which paved the way for his career in law and public administration. Over the years, he gained a strong reputation as a lawyer, teacher, and political figure, eventually becoming prominent in Slovak national politics after Czechoslovakia split in 1993.
Gašparovič became an important figure in Slovak politics during the 1990s, holding key government positions, including Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. He was linked to the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, led by Vladimír Mečiar, but later started his own party, the Movement for Democracy, to position himself as an independent centrist before the 2004 presidential election.
In 2004, Gašparovič won the Slovak presidential election, defeating his opponent in a runoff to become Slovakia's third President. His presidency saw Slovakia join the European Union and NATO in 2004 and adopt the euro in 2009. He was reelected in 2009, becoming the first, and as of now, the only Slovak president to serve two terms.
During his ten years in office, Gašparovič represented Slovakia internationally and received numerous foreign honors such as the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic from Spain in 2007, the Knight of the Order of the Elephant from Denmark in 2012, and the Order of the White Eagle from Poland. In Slovakia, he was awarded the Andrej Hlinka Order Class I in 1998 and the Ľudovít Štúr Order 1st Class in 2004, acknowledging his contributions to the country. He is married to Silvia Gašparovičová, who was the first lady during his presidency.

Ivan Gašparovič grew up in Poltár when Slovakia was part of communist Czechoslovakia, a political setting that influenced career paths in law and public administration.
