Biography
João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo was born on 27 May 1994 in Barreiro, Portugal. Known for his aggressive attacking play and technical skills, Cancelo came up through Benfica's youth system and made his professional debut with them. He permanently joined Valencia in May 2015, becoming one of the most dynamic defenders in Spanish football. A loan to Inter Milan in August 2017 caught the attention of Italy's top clubs. Juventus signed him in June 2018, and during his time there, he won a Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana, proving himself as a versatile and offensively minded full-back at the highest level.
In the summer of 2019, Cancelo joined Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola, starting the most successful part of his club career so far. In over 154 appearances, he won three Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups, and one FA Cup. His ability to move from the full-back position into midfield and contribute to attacks made him central to Guardiola's strategy. He played a key role when Manchester City reached their first UEFA Champions League final in the 2020-21 season and was part of the team that achieved the continental treble in 2022-23.
In January 2023, Cancelo was loaned to Bayern Munich, where he won a Bundesliga title, adding to his list of honors in Europe's major leagues. After returning to City, he signed with the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in August 2024, then returned to European football on loan at Barcelona in January 2026. There, he won the La Liga title, making him the only player in history to have won league titles in England, Italy, Germany, and Spain.
Cancelo made his senior debut for Portugal in 2016, after playing at every youth level. He was on the under-21 team that reached the final of the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. With the senior team, he was part of the squad for the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals held in Portugal, winning the first edition of the competition. He was also in Portugal's squads for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 UEFA European Championship, establishing himself as a long-serving and important figure in the national team.
