Biography
Armando Sadiku was born on May 27, 1991, in Elbasan, Albania, and became one of Albania's top strikers in the early 21st century. He started his professional journey with Turbina in Albania's second division, Kategoria e Parë, and played there for two seasons before moving to the top-tier club Gramozi in 2009. During his standout season at Gramozi, he scored eight goals, which led to a move to Elbasani. However, his stint at Elbasani was cut short after just half a season due to a ban from Albanian football for non-sporting behavior, prompting him to look for opportunities abroad.
Sadiku's move to Switzerland in the early 2010s was a key moment in his career. He joined Locarno and quickly made a name for himself as a top goalscorer in the Swiss Challenge League. He won the top goalscorer award in his first full season in 2011-12. This success led to a transfer to FC Lugano in July 2012, where he continued his scoring streak with 20 goals in the 2012-13 Swiss Challenge League season, earning another top scorer award. His performances showed he could handle European football and highlighted the technical skills that would later benefit him internationally.
In November 2013, Sadiku moved up to Switzerland's top division by joining FC Zürich. His time there was tough, with limited playing opportunities and injuries affecting his progress. A major injury in May 2014 kept him out for six months, breaking his stride. Despite these hurdles, he was with the club during their 2013-14 Swiss Cup win, but he only managed to score three goals that season. The 2015-16 season was better, as Sadiku regained his form, scoring eight goals in 18 matches and becoming the team's top scorer.
Sadiku's international career peaked during the 2016 European Championship in France, where he cemented his place in Albanian football history. He scored Albania's first-ever goal at a major tournament, elevating him to national hero status. This goal came during Albania's first appearance at a European Championship, marking a key moment for Albanian football. Throughout his international career, Sadiku scored 12 goals for his country, making him one of Albania's joint leading active scorers. In his later career, he played for various clubs across Europe and beyond, including FC Cartagena in Spain and Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League, before joining Swiss Challenge League side Bellinzona.
Before Fame
Growing up in Elbasan during the 1990s and early 2000s, Sadiku matured during a key time for Albanian football. Although Albania joined UEFA in 1954 and FIFA in 1932, the years after communism brought new chances for players to build careers at home and abroad. Elbasan, being a major Albanian city, was a good place for nurturing young football talent.
Sadiku's early career followed a common path for players of his time. He began with Turbina in the second division, honing his skills in the competitive world of Albanian football before moving up to the top division with Gramozi. His breakthrough season, where he scored eight goals, showed his scoring ability that would define his career. Eventually, a ban from Albanian football led him to explore international opportunities, shaping his future career path.
