Biography

Joel Antonio Aguilar Chicas was born on July 2, 1975, in San Salvador, El Salvador. He became a FIFA-listed international referee in 2002, beginning a career that would see him officiate at the highest levels of world football for nearly two decades. His rise through the refereeing ranks in Central America established him as one of the most respected officials from the CONCACAF region, earning consistent recognition from both continental and global governing bodies.

Aguilar first gained significant international exposure when he was selected to referee matches at the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada, where he handled three group-stage matches. That same year he also officiated at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, signaling his emergence as a trusted official on multiple fronts. His reputation continued to grow with subsequent assignments at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup and qualification matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Although selected as a reserve official for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he served only in the role of fourth official during that tournament.

The years between 2011 and 2015 represented the peak of Aguilar's international profile. In 2011 he was appointed to referee the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Final between Rayados de Monterrey and Real Salt Lake, and he also officiated the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He went on to referee the finals of the 2013 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cups as well, making him one of very few officials to take charge of three consecutive Gold Cup finals. He also appeared at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

On January 14, 2014, the FIFA Referees Committee appointed Aguilar as one of the match officials for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, marking a milestone for Salvadoran football officiating. He was subsequently named for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, making him one of a select group of referees to officiate at two consecutive World Cup tournaments. In January 2016 he was named the CONCACAF 2015 Male Referee of the Year, an honor that reflected his consistent performances throughout that period. Over the course of his career he also officiated 11 Salvadoran League finals, demonstrating his prominence at the domestic level as well.

Before Fame

Joel Aguilar grew up in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, during a period when the country was rebuilding its social and institutional structures following years of civil conflict that ended in 1992. Football has long held a central place in Salvadoran culture, and the local refereeing infrastructure, while modest compared to larger footballing nations, provided a pathway for dedicated officials to progress through domestic competition toward regional and eventually global assignments.

Aguilar earned his FIFA international referee badge in 2002, a credential that opened the door to assignments across CONCACAF competitions. His early years as an international official coincided with significant investment by FIFA and CONCACAF in referee development programs across the region, which helped elevate the standard of officiating in Central America and created opportunities for talented referees from smaller footballing nations to compete for high-profile appointments.
