Biography

Pascal Siakam was born on April 2, 1994, in Douala, Cameroon. He got into basketball later than most pros, initially playing soccer before switching to basketball in his teens. His athleticism and quick improvement grabbed scouts' attention, opening doors for him to play college basketball in the U.S. Siakam attended New Mexico State University, where he played for the Aggies and became one of the top players in the Western Athletic Conference. He was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016, boosting his prospects for the draft. The Toronto Raptors picked Siakam 27th overall in the first round of the 2016 NBA draft. Early in his pro career, he spent time in the NBA Development League, leading Toronto's affiliate team to a championship and earning Finals MVP honors in 2017. This experience was key to his growth as a player. Siakam's breakthrough came in the 2018-19 season when he became a key player in the Raptors' championship run. His skills as a power forward, mixing length, athleticism, and a better outside shot, made him vital to Toronto's title team. That season, he was the first player in NBA history to win both the Most Improved Player Award and an NBA championship in the same year. After the championship, Siakam kept improving, earning his first All-Star selection in 2020 and being named to the All-NBA Second Team. His performance helped Toronto secure the second-best record in the league that season. After making a second All-Star appearance in 2023, Siakam was traded to the Indiana Pacers during the 2023-24 season, where he kept up his high level of play and earned more All-Star honors in 2025 and 2026, while also leading the Pacers to the NBA Finals.

Before Fame

Growing up in Douala, Cameroon's largest city and economic hub, Siakam was more interested in soccer than basketball, like many African athletes. He discovered basketball later in his teens, and his quick improvement surprised many. His soccer background helped him develop footwork and agility, which became useful in basketball. His rise to success was unusual because he started basketball late and had to compete with players who had been honing their skills since they were kids.
