Biography
Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai was born on 18 December 1972 in Singapore. He went to Tanjong Katong Secondary School and then studied abroad. He got degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Michigan and later completed graduate studies at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. This education set him up for a career in economic policy, public administration, and politics.
Before getting into politics, Wong had a long career in the Singapore civil service. He worked at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Health. From 2005 to 2008, he was the principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, a job that put him close to key executive decisions. He later became the CEO of the Energy Market Authority from 2009 to 2011, managing Singapore's electricity and gas markets.
Wong entered Parliament in the 2011 general election, joining the People's Action Party team in the West Coast Group Representation Constituency and winning a seat. In 2015, he moved to the Marsiling–Yew Tee GRC, representing the Limbang division, and has held this seat since. Over the next ten years, he gained ministerial experience in areas like Culture, Community and Youth; National Development; Education; and Communications and Information. He became the Second Minister for Finance in 2016 and took on the full Finance role in 2021.
Wong's national role grew significantly in January 2020 when he was made co-chair of the task force handling Singapore's COVID-19 response. His clear communication during the pandemic, such as regular press briefings, made him well-known among Singaporeans. As Minister for Finance, he managed the planned Goods and Services Tax increase, which rose from seven percent to eight percent in 2023 and will go to nine percent in 2024. In April 2022, the People's Action Party named him as the leader of its next-generation leadership team, announcing him as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's intended successor.
In 2023, Wong was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and became the Prime Minister of Singapore on 15 May 2024, as the country's fourth prime minister. This marked a leadership change in the PAP following Lee Hsien Loong's almost twenty-year term. Wong kept the Finance portfolio alongside being Prime Minister, continuing to guide Singapore's financial policies during a time of global economic challenges.
Before Fame
Lawrence Wong grew up in Singapore during a time of fast economic growth and modernization under Lee Kuan Yew's leadership. After finishing secondary school at Tanjong Katong Secondary School, he went to university in the United States, studying at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Michigan, which are well-regarded for their programs in economics and public policy. He also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he gained more knowledge in governance and public administration.
He rose to prominence through the Singapore civil service rather than the private sector. Working in various economic and health ministries, he gained expertise in regulatory affairs and fiscal policy. His role as principal private secretary to the prime minister gave him direct exposure to top-level government. As CEO of the Energy Market Authority, he gained executive management experience, which helped establish his reputation as a strong candidate for Parliament and, eventually, for senior ministerial roles.
