Biography
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born on November 20, 1970, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. A senior member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, he is Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, as well as Minister of Presidential Affairs. He is the brother of the current UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and is married to Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed Al Maktoum, daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. He received the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to bilateral relations and international affairs.
Mansour controls a wide range of Emirati state institutions. He is chairman of two of the UAE's sovereign wealth funds, the Emirates Investment Authority and the Mubadala Investment Company, and is on the board of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. He also oversees the UAE Central Bank and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, making him one of the most influential figures in the Gulf region's financial and energy sectors. Through these roles, he manages much of the UAE's sovereign capital across global markets.
In sports, Mansour owns the Abu Dhabi United Group, an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi royal family. In September 2008, this entity acquired Manchester City Football Club, turning it from a mid-tier team into one of the most successful clubs in English football history. Under his ownership, Manchester City has won eight top-flight league titles, including the club's first in 44 years, its first Premier League title in 2012, and the UEFA Champions League in 2023. Mansour also holds stakes in other football clubs through the City Football Group, including New York City FC in Major League Soccer.
Outside of finance and sports, Mansour has played a key role in UAE foreign policy. He was involved in diplomatic and logistical efforts related to the Libyan Civil War, including support for military commander Khalifa Haftar. He has also been linked to the UAE's involvement with Sudan during Omar al-Bashir's rule and to arms transfers related to Sudanese General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, whose forces have been accused by human rights organizations of atrocities including mass killings and sexual violence. These activities have drawn ongoing criticism from human rights advocates and international observers.
Before Fame
Mansour bin Zayed was born into the influential Al Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi, which has governed the emirate for centuries. He studied internationally, first at Santa Barbara City College in California and then at United Arab Emirates University. Growing up, he witnessed the UAE's growth into a modern federation, driven by oil revenues and extensive development under the leadership of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
His rise to prominence came through his role in managing the UAE's key assets, building on his family's central influence. Instead of taking a typical private-sector path, he took on leadership roles within major financial and governmental organizations at a young age. This positioned him to make decisions involving trillions of dollars in sovereign wealth before he became internationally known for buying Manchester City Football Club in 2008.
