Biography
Margaret Theresa of Spain was born on July 12, 1651, in Madrid. She was the daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and his second wife, Mariana of Austria. As part of the Spanish Habsburg family, she grew up in the elaborate Spanish court and was taught the customs and religious duties expected of a princess meant for a royal marriage. She was the older sister of Charles II, the last Spanish Habsburg king, and her life was influenced from birth by the political strategies that guided European aristocracy in the 17th century.
From early on, Margaret Theresa was intended to marry her uncle, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. This marriage was meant to strengthen Habsburg power in both the Spanish and Austrian branches, maintaining their political and family interests. They married by proxy in Madrid in April 1666 when she was fourteen and later had a formal wedding in Vienna in December of the same year. Through this marriage, she became Holy Roman Empress, German Queen, Archduchess of Austria, and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia.
Life at the Austrian court was quite different from the Spanish setting she was used to. Margaret Theresa brought along Spanish customs and attendants, which sometimes caused tension in Austria. Despite this, she carried out her duties faithfully and had several children with Leopold I, though most did not survive infancy. Her surviving child, Maria Antonia, born in 1669, later married the Elector of Bavaria. The empress was known for her piety and was awarded the Order of the Starry Cross, a respected Catholic order in Vienna.
Margaret Theresa passed away in Vienna on March 12, 1673, at the age of twenty-one, likely due to complications from her sixth pregnancy. Her early death ended what could have been a longer period of political and family influence in the Habsburg courts. Leopold I, who had grown fond of her, mourned her deeply and arranged commemorative events in her memory.
Before Fame
Margaret Theresa spent her early childhood in the royal court of Madrid when her father, Philip IV, was one of Europe's most powerful rulers. The Spanish court was highly ceremonial, with strict protocols, and royal children were brought up with an emphasis on Catholic faith, duties to the dynasty, and education for their future roles. Her mother, Mariana of Austria, came from the Austrian Habsburg line, so Margaret Theresa was born from a tradition of intermarriage between the two branches of the family.
As Philip IV's daughter, she was painted before she became an adult. Diego Velázquez, the top court painter for the Spanish monarchy, placed her at the center of his famous painting Las Meninas in 1656 and painted her portrait several more times during her childhood. These portraits were sent to Vienna as part of the courtship process to present the young infanta to her future husband, Leopold I, making her one of the most visually recorded royal children of the seventeenth century.
