Biography
Victorio Maximiliano Pereira Páez, known as Maxi Pereira, was born on June 8, 1984, in Montevideo, Uruguay. As a professional footballer specializing in the right-back position, Pereira built one of the most successful careers among Uruguayan defenders in recent times. He was recognized at the club level in Portugal and with the Uruguayan national team.
Pereira started his professional career in Uruguay with Defensor Sporting, a well-known club in Montevideo, where he developed the skills that caught the attention of European football. His performances in Uruguay led to interest from Benfica, a top club in Portugal, and in 2007, he moved to Lisbon. This transfer marked the start of a very successful period in his career. During eight seasons with Benfica, Pereira played in 333 official matches and won 11 major titles with the club, becoming one of the most dependable full-backs in Portuguese football at the time.
In 2015, Pereira joined Porto, Benfica's main rival and another prestigious club in Portugal. This move kept his career going in the Primeira Liga and showed the high regard he was held in within Portuguese football, despite club rivalries. His time at Porto added more accomplishments to an already successful club career.
Internationally, Pereira earned 125 caps for Uruguay, placing him among the most-capped players in the country's history. He played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments and four Copa América competitions. His standout international moment came in the 2011 Copa América in Argentina, where Uruguay won the title, ending a long wait for continental success. This victory was part of a revival in Uruguayan football in the early 2010s, which also included a fourth-place finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Pereira's consistent role as right-back during this time made him a key part of the national team's defense.
After his playing career ended, Pereira moved into football coaching, staying involved in the sport that had shaped his professional life for nearly twenty years. His career as both player and coach shows his lasting commitment to football throughout his time on the field.
Before Fame
Maxi Pereira grew up in Montevideo, the capital and largest city of Uruguay—a country known for its strong football culture that has produced many top players despite its small population. Like many Uruguayan footballers of his generation, Pereira grew up in a place where football was a central part of daily life, and local club football was the main path to a professional career.
He joined Defensor Sporting, a Montevideo club known for developing young talent, and advanced through the ranks as a right-back. His performances in the Uruguayan Primera División during the mid-2000s caught the attention of European scouts, and his move to Benfica in 2007 at the age of 22 was the result of years of growth in the domestic game.
