Biography
Milorad Dodik was born on March 12, 1959, in Banja Luka, when it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He studied at the University of Belgrade and graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences, laying the foundation for his long political career. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1996, Dodik became a political player during Bosnia and Herzegovina's complex rebuilding period.
In 1996, Dodik started the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), presenting it as a moderate choice compared to the more extreme Serb Democratic Party that had been influential during the war. Early in his political career, he focused on economic rebuilding and worked pragmatically with international organizations. As Prime Minister of Republika Srpska from 1998 to 2001, he was generally well-regarded by Western governments for his readiness to implement the Dayton Peace Agreement.
In the mid-2000s, Dodik's political approach changed as he adopted a more nationalist stance. He was Prime Minister of Republika Srpska again from 2006 to 2010, then became President from 2010 to 2018. During this time, he often challenged the central government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and pushed for more autonomy for Republika Srpska. His speeches frequently included threats to secede and criticisms of Bosnia's structure.
In 2018, Dodik was elected as the Serb member of Bosnia and Herzegovina's tripartite presidency, serving until 2022 when he returned to lead Republika Srpska. Throughout his career, he kept close ties with Russia and Serbia, often aligning his politics with theirs. His time in office has been marked by conflicts with the international High Representative and resistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina joining NATO. In 2025, Dodik's career hit a major roadblock when the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina sentenced him to prison and banned him from political activity for defying the High Representative's decisions, leading to his removal as Republika Srpska's president.
Before Fame
Dodik grew up during socialist Yugoslavia under Josip Broz Tito, where he saw the federal system that gave a lot of autonomy to the republics. His education at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Political Sciences taught him about political systems and governance. This background influenced his support for decentralized power. When Yugoslavia fell apart in the early 1990s and the Bosnian War followed, the resulting political chaos opened the door for new political figures like Dodik.
After the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina needed leaders who could handle international oversight, ethnic tensions, and the challenges of rebuilding. Dodik entered politics as many people were fed up with the wartime political leaders. This created opportunities for politicians who focused on economic recovery instead of ethnic conflict.
