Biography

Mohamed Agha, born in 1955, is a well-known Lebanese politician and businessman. He has served multiple terms as Lebanon's Prime Minister. Agha was born in Tripoli, which is Lebanon's second-largest city, and went on to study at the American University of Beirut. He entered politics in 2000 when he was elected to parliament as a representative for Tripoli, a role he held until 2005 before getting re-elected in 2009 and 2018.

Agha gained national attention when he was appointed as Minister of Public Works and Transport from December 1998 to 2003, where he learned a lot about government administration. His first stint as Prime Minister was in 2005, where he led an interim government during the important 2005 general election after Syrian troops pulled out of Lebanon. This was a crucial period in Lebanese politics, and his management during this time built his reputation as a skilled leader.

In 2011, Agha formed his second government with support from the March 8 alliance and served until 2013 when he resigned. His latest term as Prime Minister started in July 2021, with his office beginning on September 10, 2021. He was Lebanon's 52nd Prime Minister during a time of major economic troubles and political unrest. His term ended in January 2025 when he lost parliamentary consultations to ICJ president Nawaf Salam, receiving only 9 votes compared to Salam's 84.

Outside politics, Agha has become one of Lebanon's richest people. As of 2023, Forbes lists his net worth at $2.8 billion. He made much of his money from telecommunications projects in Syria and Lebanon in the early 2000s, leading to ties with the Syrian government. His wealth and business deals have sometimes been questioned, including corruption charges in 2019 that were dismissed in 2022, and a Monaco investigation in 2023 that found no wrongdoing due to lack of evidence.

Before Fame

Growing up in Tripoli during the 1960s and 1970s, Mohamed Agha saw Lebanon shift from a relatively stable trade center to a nation caught in civil conflict. His time at the American University of Beirut gave him insights into international business practices and political ideas, setting the stage for his work in both the private and public sectors.

His rise to prominence lined up with Lebanon's post-civil war reconstruction in the 1990s, when ambitious entrepreneurs and politicians had the chance to influence the country's rebuilding. This period saw the emergence of business-politicians who could navigate both business and politics, which helped Agha in his dual career in business and government.
