He is considered one of Indonesia's top Quran reciters, known for his melodious voice, exceptional breath capacity, and precise use of tajwid, the rules for proper Quranic pronunciation and recitation. His fame goes beyond Indonesia, as he has performed at many prestigious Islamic events in Asia, the Middle East, and other regions.
Muammar's talent for Quranic recitation emerged early. At just seven years old in 1962, he won a local children's Quran competition in his hometown. This early success kicked off a competitive career that spanned decades and reached international levels. Through his teenage years, Muammar's dedication and training helped him achieve a series of victories that made him well-known.
In the 1960s and 1970s, he achieved several notable competitive successes. In 1967, he won first place in the Quran Reciting Competition, known as Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ), at the Yogyakarta provincial level. He then represented Yogyakarta province in national MTQ competitions in 1972 and 1973. These wins established him as one of the leading reciters in Indonesia, attracting attention from national audiences and international Islamic organizations.
Muammar's international achievements came in 1979 and 1986 when he won international Quran reciting competitions, solidifying his global reputation. This recognition led to invitations to recite at prominent venues in the Muslim world, like the Istana Nurul Iman in Brunei and the National Palace of Malaysia. He also performed in the Middle East, Turkey, and Pakistan, including an IGMG Aileler Günü event in Turkey in 2004 and a recitation hosted by Jamia Binoria in Pakistan in 2009. His extraordinary breath capacity during recitations became widely noted, adding a unique aspect to his already admired vocal technique.
