Biography

Mishary bin Rashid Alafasy was born in 1976 in Kuwait City, Kuwait. He studied at the Islamic University of Madinah, focusing on the Holy Quran and the ten qira'at, the methods of Quranic recitation, along with tafsir, the study of Quranic interpretation. This education gave him the skills and understanding that define his career as a prominent figure in Islamic recitation today.

After completing his studies, Alafasy returned to Kuwait and took on the role of imam at the Grand Mosque, a key religious center in the country. This position allowed him to reach large groups of worshippers and raised his profile in the region. His style of recitation, known for precise tajweed and a moving delivery, drew listeners from far beyond Kuwait, establishing him as an important figure in the Islamic world.

In addition to his work as a qari and imam, Alafasy has built a successful career as a nasheed artist, releasing many albums over the years. His nasheeds include not only Arabic songs but also those in Japanese, Turkish, English, and French, aiming to connect with Muslim communities worldwide. This multilingual approach has made his work popular among diverse Muslim audiences across the globe.

Alafasy's online presence has greatly increased his reach. His YouTube channel has more than 11.6 million subscribers, and several of his recordings have high view counts. Two nasheeds have each exceeded 200 million views, and one recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah is nearing 100 million views. Many other recordings have each surpassed 10 million views. His voice is also a common feature on popular Quran listening apps, making his recitations some of the most listened to in digital Islamic media. In August 2025, he launched his own Quranic and prayer app, Alafasy.co, expanding his work into Islamic technology and mobile spirituality.

Before Fame

Mishary Rashid Alafasy grew up in Kuwait City when the country was modernizing but still held on to its strong Islamic traditions. His early interest in studying the Quran led him to seek education abroad, a common choice for many Gulf students looking for advanced Islamic learning. He traveled to Madinah, Saudi Arabia, to attend the Islamic University of Madinah, known as one of the leading centers for Islamic education worldwide.

At the university's College of the Holy Quran, Alafasy studied all ten canonical recitation traditions, a qualification that not many scholars achieve. This specialized training, along with his naturally gifted voice, allowed him to start his professional recitation career at a high level after finishing his studies. He became well-known in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a time when cassette recordings and, later, internet audio were becoming popular. These technologies enabled reciters to reach audiences beyond their local mosques for the first time.
