Biography

Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, widely known as Nani, was born on November 17, 1986, in Praia, Cape Verde's capital, and grew up in Portugal. A winger known for his speed, flair, and crossing ability, Nani became one of the most successful Portuguese footballers of his time. He started his youth career with Sporting CP in 2003, made his senior debut for the club in 2005, and won the Portuguese Cup, drawing attention across Europe.

In July 2007, Manchester United signed Nani for the 2007–08 season, and he quickly became a first-team regular under Sir Alex Ferguson. His time at Old Trafford was very successful. He won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, three FA Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. Despite occasional questions about his consistency, his technical skill and ability to break defenses with his runs and precise crosses made him a key player in United's attack over several seasons.

After a loan back at Sporting CP, where he won another Portuguese Cup, Nani joined Turkish club Fenerbahçe in 2015. A year later, he moved to Valencia in Spain before returning to Sporting in 2018, where he won a third Portuguese Cup and the Portuguese League Cup. He then joined Orlando City in Major League Soccer, serving as captain for three seasons until the end of 2021. In January 2022, he moved to Venezia in Italy, starting shorter stints that took him to Australia, Turkey, and back to Portugal.

Internationally, Nani debuted for Portugal in 2006, earning 112 caps and scoring 24 goals. He played in three UEFA European Championships (2008, 2012, and 2016) and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. His most memorable moment was at Euro 2016 when he started the final against France and, after Cristiano Ronaldo's injury, captained the team to their historic victory. He was honored with the Commander of the Order of Merit of Portugal for his contributions to the national team and football.

Nani announced his retirement from football in December 2024, ending a nearly two-decade career at the top level. That retirement didn't last long, as he returned in January 2026 to join Kazakh team Aktobe, extending a career that had already taken him around Europe, North America, and beyond.

Before Fame

Nani was born in Praia, Cape Verde, and moved to Portugal at a young age, growing up in the Amadora district near Lisbon. It was here, influenced by the football-loving culture of the Lisbon suburbs, that his talent started to shine. He joined the Sporting CP academy in 2003, becoming part of one of Portugal's most famous youth systems, which had produced players like Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo before him.

His two years in Sporting's youth and reserve teams gave him the technical skills and tactical understanding needed for his professional career. By the time he made his senior debut in 2005, it was evident that his blend of speed, skill, and work rate made him stand out. His performances over the next two seasons, including winning a Portuguese Cup medal, caught the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs, leading to his move to Manchester United in the summer of 2007.
