Biography
Óscar Nicanor Duarte Frutos was born on October 11, 1956, in Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay, to a lower-class rural family. He attended Universidad Católica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Universidad Nacional de Asunción, where he studied law. Before moving into politics, Duarte had a career in journalism, working as a radio sports commentator and newspaper columnist. This gave him a public profile that was uncommon among Paraguayan politicians of his time.
Before Fame
Growing up in rural Paraguay during Alfredo Stroessner's long dictatorship, Duarte experienced life in a country where the Colorado Party dominated politics and moving up the social ladder was hard. His studies in law and his work in journalism during the 1980s and early 1990s placed him within Colorado Party circles just as Paraguay was transitioning to democracy after Stroessner was overthrown in 1989. In the 1990s, he served as Minister of Education twice, under Presidents Juan Carlos Wasmosy and Luis González Macchi, proving himself a capable administrator within the party. He became closely connected with Colorado leader Luis María Argaña, and after Argaña's assassination in March 1999, Duarte gained much of Argaña's political support and influence, speeding up his path to the presidency.
