Biography
Valtteri Viktor Bottas was born on August 28, 1989, in Nastola, Finland, and is one of Finland's most successful Formula One drivers. He started his motorsport journey in karting at six and moved up the ranks, starting in junior formulae in 2007. After finishing his automotive engineering studies and mandatory military service, Bottas found success in lower racing categories. He won the Formula Renault NEC and Formula Renault Eurocup championships in 2008, narrowly beating future Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo by three points in the latter. He continued his winning run by taking the Masters of Formula 3 titles in 2009 and 2010 with ART Grand Prix, and he won the GP3 Series championship in 2011.
Bottas joined Formula One in 2013 with Williams Racing, teaming up with Pastor Maldonado after two years as a test driver. His breakthrough year was 2014, finishing fourth in the World Drivers' Championship and getting his first podium at the Austrian Grand Prix. During his four seasons with Williams, he showed consistent performance with nine podium finishes, proving himself a fast and dependable driver capable of making the most of the car.
In 2017, Bottas joined Mercedes, taking over from the retired Nico Rosberg alongside Lewis Hamilton. This move was a game-changer for his career, as he earned his first pole position in Bahrain and his first Grand Prix win in Russia that year. He added wins in Austria and Abu Dhabi, finishing third in the championship. After a winless 2018, Bottas hit his peak in 2019 and 2020, finishing second in the World Drivers' Championship both years behind teammate Hamilton.
Bottas played a big role in Mercedes' success, helping them secure five straight World Constructors' Championships from 2017 to 2021. His last win for Mercedes was at the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix before he moved to Alfa Romeo (later known as Sauber) for the 2022 season. After struggling with an uncompetitive car and not scoring points in 2024, Bottas returned to Mercedes as a reserve driver. Throughout his Formula One career, he has achieved 10 race wins, 20 pole positions, 19 fastest laps, and 67 podiums across 13 seasons, making him one of the most successful drivers of his generation.
Before Fame
Growing up in Nastola, a small town in southern Finland, Bottas got into motorsport early on through karting. His father played a big role in developing his interest in racing, and Bottas quickly showed talent behind the wheel. Finland is known for motorsport, especially rally driving and Formula One, thanks to legends like Mika Häkkinen and Kimi Räikkönen, who set the stage for future racers.
Bottas balanced his racing dreams with studying automotive engineering while moving up in the karting world. After finishing Finland's required military service, he switched to single-seater racing in 2007. His careful approach and engineering background helped him understand car setups and technical details, skills that became very useful in his racing career. The organized way Finland trains racers, along with his natural speed and analytical mind, set him up for success in Formula One.
