Biography

Raúl González Blanco, known simply as Raúl, was born on June 27, 1977, in Madrid, Spain. A forward with exceptional skill and intelligence, he is widely seen as one of the greatest strikers ever. Over a career that spanned more than 20 years, Raúl played in over 1,000 professional games and became the top Spanish scorer in the UEFA Champions League, scoring 71 goals.

Raúl spent 16 years at Real Madrid, joining their youth academy after starting at Atlético Madrid's youth setup. He debuted for Real Madrid's first team at 17 and quickly became one of the most prolific and reliable forwards in La Liga. During his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, he scored 323 goals in 741 games, making him the club's second-highest scorer ever and, at the time, the player with the most appearances. His honours with Real Madrid included six La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League trophies, four Supercopa de España titles, one UEFA Super Cup, and two Intercontinental Cups. He became club captain in 2003 and was a key player throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.

After leaving Real Madrid in 2010, Raúl joined German club Schalke 04 and continued to excel, winning the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup. He then played for Qatari club Al Sadd before ending his career with the New York Cosmos in the United States. During this time, Raúl showed a professionalism and adaptability that earned him respect in various football environments.

For Spain, Raúl earned 102 caps and scored 44 goals, playing in three FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships. He captained the national team starting in 2002 and retired from international football in 2006. He received many individual awards, including two Pichichi Trophies in 1999 and 2001, five Don Balón Awards, three UEFA Club Forward of the Year honours from 1999 to 2002, and the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit. In 2004, he was named in the FIFA 100, a list of the world's best living players compiled by Pelé.

After retiring, Raúl moved into football management. He led Real Madrid Castilla, the club's reserve team, and later managed youth operations before taking on senior coaching roles. His post-playing career shows the same dedication to the game that marked his time as one of Spain's most celebrated players.

Before Fame

Raúl González Blanco grew up in Madrid during the 1980s, a time when Spanish football was working on better domestic academies and youth systems. He first joined Atlético Madrid's youth program, where his talent was clear early on. Due to changes in Atlético's academy, he left and joined Real Madrid's famous La Fábrica youth academy, a move that would be important for him and the club.

His progress through Real Madrid's youth levels was fast. Growing up in a city where football was a big part of everyday life and where the rivalry between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid defined the sports culture of entire neighborhoods, Raúl developed a strong competitive edge and improved his technical skills. By the mid-1990s, as Spanish football was becoming more prominent in Europe, he joined Real Madrid's first team and quickly started living up to the high expectations that had been with him since his teenage years.
