Biography
Raif Badawi, born in 1984, is a Saudi Arabian blogger, writer, and human rights activist known for his fight for free speech and liberal values in Saudi Arabia. In 2008, he started the Free Saudi Liberals website to discuss political and social reform, religious tolerance, and human rights in the conservative Islamic country. The site provided a space for debate and articles that questioned traditional Islamic views and criticized the religious establishment's power over Saudi politics and society.
In 2012, Saudi authorities arrested Badawi for allegedly insulting Islam through his writings and violating the country's anti-cybercrime law. He was initially sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes, but an appeals court later increased it to 10 years, 1,000 lashes, and a fine of one million Saudi riyals ($266,000).
The first 50 lashes were given publicly in Jeddah in January 2015, leading to worldwide outrage and diplomatic pressure from governments, human rights organizations, and the United Nations. Delays in further lashings were reportedly due to medical issues and international backlash. Badawi's case became a symbol of the fight for free expression in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.
During his imprisonment, Badawi's wife, Ensaf Haidar, and their three children moved to Canada, where they received asylum. Haidar campaigned for Badawi's release and kept his case in the international spotlight. Badawi was freed in March 2022 after completing his sentence, but he faces a 10-year travel ban, preventing him from leaving Saudi Arabia to reunite with his family.
