Biography

Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda was born on January 13, 1997, in Barrancas, Colombia. He's become one of the top Colombian footballers of his generation, making a name for himself as a dynamic left winger with incredible speed, dribbling skills, and ability to press opponents. He started his professional career in Colombia's second division with Barranquilla before joining Atlético Junior, where he played a key role in the club's victories in the Categoría Primera A, Copa Colombia, and Superliga Colombiana.

In 2019, Díaz moved to Europe when Porto in Portugal signed him for about €7 million. His time at Porto was transformative, as he developed into a highly regarded winger in Europe, helping the team win two Primeira Liga titles, a Taça de Portugal, and a Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. During the first half of the 2021-22 season, he was outstanding, scoring 14 goals in 18 league games, which caught the attention of top European clubs.

Liverpool FC signed Díaz in January 2022 for €45 million (£37.5 million), aiming to boost their attack. He quickly made an impact at Anfield, helping the team win both the EFL Cup and FA Cup in his first season, and was named man of the match in the FA Cup final. His consistent performances raised his profile as one of the top wingers worldwide.

After playing a role in Liverpool's Premier League win in the 2024-25 season, Díaz made a significant career move by joining German champions Bayern Munich for a fee of €75 million including add-ons. This transfer marked the high point of his club career, transitioning from Colombian football through Portugal and England to join one of Europe's top clubs. His international career has been equally impressive, with over 60 caps for Colombia since his senior debut in 2018, and standout performances in Copa América tournaments, where he was the top scorer in 2021 and helped Colombia reach the final in 2024.

Before Fame

Growing up in Barrancas, a small town in La Guajira, Colombia, Díaz learned to play football in modest circumstances. He started his career in Colombia's lower divisions, where he developed the athletic and technical skills that later set him apart internationally.

To become a professional footballer in Colombia, young players often need to switch between clubs and divisions for experience and visibility. Díaz took this common path, starting with Barranquilla in Categoría Primera B before getting his chance with Atlético Junior, a well-known top club in Colombia, where his outstanding wing play started getting noticed more widely.
