Biography
Razambek Salambekovich Zhamalov was born on July 1, 1998, in Petrakovskoye, Russia, into a Chechen family. Competing in freestyle wrestling in the 74-kilogram weight class, he quickly established himself as one of the top wrestlers of his generation. Early in his career, he found success in Russian domestic competitions, becoming a two-time Russian National champion and reaching the national championship final four times, showing consistent top-level performance in a highly competitive field.
Zhamalov gained significant international attention at youth and under-23 levels, excelling against future senior world-class competitors. His biggest achievement as a junior came in 2019, when he won the U23 World Championship title, proving his readiness to compete with the best senior wrestlers worldwide. In 2020, he won the Individual World Cup, further solidifying his status as a top wrestler in the 74-kilogram division.
Despite his success representing Russia, Zhamalov made a notable decision to represent Uzbekistan, allowing him to compete in the Olympics. Representing Uzbekistan, he entered the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics as one of the favorites in his weight class. He lived up to those expectations by winning the gold medal, defeating international opponents and earning Uzbekistan's first Olympic wrestling gold at 74 kilograms. This victory was the result of years of dedicated training and competitive experience in two national programs.
Throughout his career, Zhamalov has been known for his technical skill and physical strength, with strong takedowns and solid defensive wrestling. His experience in Russia's tough national system gave him the depth and resilience needed to excel at the highest international levels. His switch to Uzbekistan also highlights a broader trend of athletes from the former Soviet Union seeking opportunities with new national teams while drawing on shared wrestling traditions and coaching techniques.
