Óscar Esaú Duarte Gaitán, born on June 3, 1989, is a Costa Rican footballer who plays as a center-back for Deportivo Saprissa. Though born in Nicaragua, he was raised in Costa Rica and became one of the region's top defenders through his performances in Europe and international contests. Duarte rose through the youth ranks at Deportivo Saprissa, a leading club in Costa Rica, before starting his professional career in the early 2010s.
In 2013, Duarte's career took off when he joined Club Brugge in Belgium, kicking off his time in Europe. He proved himself as a solid central defender, later moving to Spain's La Liga, where he spent seven years playing for RCD Espanyol and Levante UD. While in Spain, he played 111 league games and scored four goals, showing his skill in the air and threat during set pieces.
On the international stage, Duarte has been a key player for the Costa Rica national team since his debut in 2010. One of his biggest accomplishments came during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he helped Costa Rica reach the quarter-finals.
