Biography

Javier Aguirre Onaindía, born December 1, 1958, in Mexico City, is a Mexican football manager and former professional player who is one of Mexico's most seasoned international coaches. Known as "El Vasco" (The Basque), Aguirre has enjoyed a long career in football, both as a player and manager, spanning more than forty years. He started his professional playing career at Club América as a midfielder, where he won a Primera División title. He later moved to Guadalajara, playing in over 100 games before retiring. In his international playing career, Aguirre made 59 appearances for the Mexico national team, scored 14 goals, and played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup hosted in Mexico.

After hanging up his boots, Aguirre shifted to management, known for his tactical flexibility and resilience. He began his coaching career with Pachuca, quickly making a name for himself in Mexican football. His success at the club level led to his first role as manager of the Mexico national team, guiding them to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This marked the start of his long involvement in international football management.

Aguirre's managerial career also grew in Europe. His most notable role there was with Atlético Madrid in La Liga, where he ensured strong league finishes and secured European spots for the team. He also managed other Spanish clubs like Osasuna and Mallorca, leading them to Copa del Rey finals and proving his ability to get the best out of his teams regardless of resources.

Internationally, Aguirre has managed several national teams across different continents. Alongside his work with Mexico, he has also led the Japan and Egypt national teams, showing his adaptability to different football cultures and styles. His experience with Mexico includes leading the team at the 2002, 2010, and 2026 FIFA World Cups, making him one of the few coaches to manage a national team at multiple World Cups over different decades. Currently, as Mexico's national team manager, Aguirre continues to impact Mexican football and international competition strategies.

Growing up in Mexico City during the 1960s and 1970s, Aguirre came of age at a time when Mexican football was starting to gain international attention. Club América, where Aguirre started his professional career, was becoming one of Mexico's top clubs around this time.

The growth of professional football in Mexico during the late 1970s set the stage for Aguirre to enter the professional scene.
