Biography
Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on December 1, 1949, in Rionegro, Colombia, and became one of the most infamous drug lords in history. Known as the "King of Cocaine," he started and led the Medellín Cartel, which dominated the cocaine trade during the 1980s and early 1990s. His criminal empire brought in huge wealth, with estimates putting his net worth at around $30 billion by the time he died, making him one of the richest criminals ever.
Escobar's rise to power began in the early 1970s when he shifted from petty crime to drug trafficking. He set up the first major smuggling routes from Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador through Colombia into the United States. By 1976, he had started the Medellín Cartel, which would eventually control up to 80% of the global cocaine market. At his peak in the 1980s, his group was smuggling 70 to 80 tons of cocaine each month into the United States, generating billions in revenue.
Besides his criminal activities, Escobar had political ambitions and was elected as an alternate member of Colombia's Chamber of Representatives in 1982 as part of the Liberal Party. He used his position and wealth to fund community projects, including housing and sports facilities, which gained him local support. However, his political career was short as growing pressure from Colombian and U.S. authorities forced him to resign from Congress.
Escobar's rule was marked by extreme violence and terrorism. He fought against the Colombian state, rival cartels, and extradition policies through bombings, assassinations, and massacres. His terror campaign included the deaths of thousands of police officers, judges, journalists, and politicians. The violence escalated when he escaped from his self-designed prison, La Catedral, in 1992, leading to an intense manhunt. Pablo Escobar was killed by Colombian National Police on December 2, 1993, in Medellín, ending his decades-long criminal career and reign of terror.
Before Fame
Escobar was born into a middle-class family in Rionegro and grew up in Medellín. He attended Universidad Autónoma Latinoamericana for a short time but didn't graduate. His early criminal activities involved selling contraband cigarettes, fake lottery tickets, and stealing cars. These small illegal ventures gave him the money and connections he needed to enter the drug trade.
In the early 1970s, Escobar started working for established drug smugglers and was often involved in kidnappings for ransom. The growing demand for cocaine in the United States at that time provided huge opportunities for ambitious criminals. Escobar saw the potential profits in cocaine trafficking and gradually built his network, eventually becoming a major player in the growing drug trade that would change Colombia's crime scene.
