Biography

Sileshi Sihine (Amharic: ስለሺ ስህኔ) was born on 29 January 1983 in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. He is a retired long-distance runner who became one of the most decorated Ethiopian track athletes of his generation, competing at the highest levels of international athletics throughout the 2000s. Married to fellow Ethiopian distance running star Tirunesh Dibaba, Sihine was part of a household that represented some of the finest long-distance running talent the world had seen in a single era.

Sihine rose to global prominence at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics, where he claimed a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres, signaling his arrival as a serious contender on the world stage. Just one year later, at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, he pushed all the way to a silver medal finish in the 10,000 metres, finishing behind the legendary Kenenisa Bekele, his compatriot and the dominant force in distance running at the time. This result established Sihine as a consistent and formidable competitor at the highest level of the sport.

He continued his strong form into the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, where he earned two silver medals, one in the 10,000 metres and one in the 5,000 metres, demonstrating his versatility across the middle-to-long distance events. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, he again claimed silver in the 10,000 metres. His performances at the 2008 Beijing Olympics represented a fitting capstone to his championship career, as he once more took silver in the 10,000 metres, making him one of the rare athletes to win Olympic silver medals in the same event at consecutive Games.

Following his retirement from competitive athletics, Sihine transitioned into sports administration. He served as president of the Ethiopian Athletic Federation from 2015 to 2016 and returned to the role in 2024, reflecting the respect he commands within Ethiopian athletics circles. His administrative work has positioned him as an influential figure in the governance of the sport in his home country.

Before Fame

Sihine grew up in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, a part of the country with a deep culture of long-distance running and a history of producing world-class athletes. Ethiopia's high-altitude geography, particularly across regions like Oromia, has long provided natural training conditions that contribute to the development of exceptional aerobic capacity in its runners.

Emerging as a junior talent in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Sihine came of age during a period when Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes were redefining expectations in distance running. Competing in an era shaped by Haile Gebrselassie's record-breaking achievements and the rising dominance of Kenenisa Bekele, Sihine developed his craft in one of the most competitive national programs in the world, eventually breaking through to the international scene with his bronze medal performance at the 2003 World Championships.
