Biography

Sonia Gandhi, born on December 9, 1946, in Lusiana, Italy, is an Italian-born Indian politician known for her significant impact on modern India. Raised in a Roman Catholic family, she moved to Cambridge, England, for language studies, where she met Rajiv Gandhi, son of future Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. They married in 1968, and Sonia moved to India, living with her mother-in-law, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Despite being part of India's leading political family, Sonia kept a low profile during her early married life, even when her husband was Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. Her life changed after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991. Although initially refusing to lead the Congress party, persistent requests and the party's struggles led her to enter politics in 1997. She was elected President of the Indian National Congress in 1998, marking the start of the longest tenure in the party's history. Under her leadership, the Congress party rebounded, forming a coalition government after the 2004 general elections. Although she could have become Prime Minister, she declined and chose to lead the United Progressive Alliance from behind the scenes. Her leadership helped the UPA win re-election in 2009. Sonia served as Congress President until 2017, for nineteen years, and returned as interim president from 2019 to 2022, making her the longest-serving president in the party's history.

Before Fame

Before entering Indian politics, Sonia Gandhi lived a relatively private life as part of the Gandhi family. Born into a middle-class Italian family, her father was a building contractor and her mother was a homemaker. She spent her early years in the Italian countryside, receiving a traditional Catholic upbringing and education. Moving to Cambridge for language studies was her first big step outside Italy and accidentally set the course for her later role in Indian politics. Gandhi first arrived in India during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time of major political change in the country. Her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi was pushing for significant economic and social reforms and faced a lot of political opposition. During this period, Sonia Gandhi purposely stayed away from political activities, focusing on raising her children, Rahul and Priyanka, while observing the Indian political scene from within the Gandhi family.
