Biography
Łukasz Piotr Piszczek was born on June 3, 1985, in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland. He started his senior football career in 2004 with German club Hertha Berlin. After getting his start in professional football, he was loaned to Polish Ekstraklasa team Zagłębie Lubin until 2007. When he returned to Hertha Berlin, he switched to playing as a right-back, a position that defined his career. His impressive play at Hertha drew attention from top European clubs.
In 2010, Piszczek moved to Borussia Dortmund, marking a major phase in his football journey. Over eleven seasons, he played 363 official games and became a dependable and respected right-back in the Bundesliga. Under coach Jürgen Klopp, he was part of the Dortmund team that won the Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, challenging Bayern Munich's dominance. During his time at Dortmund, he won three DFB-Pokal cups and three DFL-Supercups and played in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final, where Dortmund lost to Bayern Munich.
On the international front, Piszczek debuted for the Poland national team in 2007 and earned over 60 caps. He played in four major international tournaments, representing Poland in three UEFA European Championships and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He retired from international football after the 2018 World Cup but played one last match for Poland in November 2019 as a farewell.
Piszczek retired from club football in 2021 and returned to Goczałkowice-Zdrój, the Polish club where he started playing as a junior. This move was seen as a return to his beginnings. In 2024, he took a new path by becoming the assistant manager at Borussia Dortmund, the club where he had achieved a lot as a player. He held this role until 2025.
In mid-2025, Piszczek went back to Goczałkowice-Zdrój before being appointed manager of I liga club GKS Tychy in November 2025. His time there was short, and he left the club by mutual agreement in March 2026, keeping his future in football management open as he continued to gain experience.
Before Fame
Łukasz Piszczek grew up in Czechowice-Dziedzice, an industrial town in the Silesia region of southern Poland. He started his football journey at local club Goczałkowice-Zdrój, improving his skills as a young player while Polish football focused on developing talent for European competition. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, there was more investment in youth development in Polish football. Players from Poland began to catch the eye of German clubs due to the countries' close proximity and ties.
Piszczek's move to Hertha Berlin in 2004 at 18 put him in the Bundesliga system at an important stage of his career. In his early years in Germany, he adjusted to professional football, and his loan period at Zagłębie Lubin gave him regular experience in the Polish top league before returning to Germany to become a regular first-team player. It was at Hertha Berlin that he fully switched to the right-back position, laying the groundwork for his future success.
