Biography

Ulises Hernán de la Cruz Bernardo was born on February 8, 1974, in Carchi Province, Ecuador. He became one of Ecuador's most successful footballers, playing for the national team 101 times between 1995 and 2010 as a defender. His international career included appearances in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, making him a key player during an important time for Ecuador's national team.

De la Cruz's club career took him across several countries. He started in Ecuador with Deportivo Quito, Barcelona S.C., and Aucas before heading to Brazil to play for Cruzeiro. His success in South America led to opportunities in the U.K., where he played for clubs like Hibernian, Aston Villa, Reading, and Birmingham City. His experience in Scotland and England made him one of the most widely traveled Ecuadorian players of his time.

After retiring from football, de la Cruz moved into politics, joining Ecuador's National Assembly in 2013 as part of the ruling Mover party. Although he was born in Carchi Province, he represents Esmeraldas Province in congress. This career change marked a significant shift from sports to public service, enabling him to contribute to his country's governance.

Besides his professional accomplishments, de la Cruz remains connected to his community through charitable work. He founded Friends of FundeCruz, a charity in his home village that supports various local projects. This work highlights his dedication to giving back to the area where he grew up and using his success to help others in his native region.

Before Fame

Growing up in Carchi Province, a northern region of Ecuador near the Colombian border, de la Cruz honed his football skills just when Ecuadorian football was starting to get noticed internationally. The 1990s were a time of growth for South American football, with better facilities and more global interest in the sport.

During de la Cruz's youth, Ecuador's football scene was full of new talent and big dreams of succeeding internationally. Players from his era would eventually help Ecuador qualify for their first World Cup in 2002, a breakthrough moment for the country's football and paving the way for future players to pursue careers abroad.
