Genzebe Dibaba Keneni, born on February 8, 1991, in Bekoji, Ethiopia, is one of the top middle- and long-distance runners in track and field history. She holds world records in indoor events like the one mile, 3,000 meters, and 5,000 meters. Outdoors, she earned a silver medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics and won gold in the same event at the 2015 World Championships, where she also took bronze in the 5,000 meters.
Dibaba started competing internationally at a young age, with her first big success at 17 when she won the World Cross Country Championships under-20 title in 2008. She also won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the World U20 Championships that same year. She continued her successful junior career by winning another Cross Country U20 title in 2009 and the World U20 Championships 5,000m gold in 2010. These early wins showed her potential in distance running.
In her professional career, she's consistently performed at a high level, competing in every World Athletics Championships from 2009 to 2017 and reaching the finals in each event. As a five-time World Indoor champion, she excelled in the 1,500m and 3,000m events, winning the 1,500m in 2012, the 3,000m in 2014 and 2016, and achieving a rare 1,500m/3,000m double in 2018. Her ability to compete in distances from 800 meters to 5,000 meters makes her one of the most well-rounded middle-distance runners of her time.
Dibaba comes from a remarkable athletic family with multiple Olympic medalists. Her sisters Tirunesh and Ejegayehu, along with her cousin Derartu Tulu, have all found Olympic success, building a strong family presence in Ethiopian distance running. This family legacy, along with her own achievements, has placed her among Ethiopia's greatest athletes. Her reputation goes beyond track and field, as she received the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award in 2014 and the IAAF World Female Athlete of the Year in 2015, marking her as one of the top athletes globally.
