Biography

Vagit Yusufovich Alekperov was born on September 1, 1950, in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, during the Soviet era. He studied at the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University, gaining expertise in petroleum engineering and economics. This knowledge would later be key in his business career. His skills in both the technical and economic sides of the oil industry made him well-suited for leadership in the energy sector during a time of significant change in the Soviet Union and later in Russia.

Alekperov started his career in the Soviet oil industry, moving up through various roles in oil production and management. He received early recognition with the Order of the Badge of Honour in 1986 for his contributions to the Soviet energy sector. As the Soviet Union shifted toward market economics, Alekperov was well-placed to take advantage of privatization opportunities. In 1993, he founded Lukoil, which grew into a major global petroleum company, making him a key player in the Russian energy industry.

From 1993 to 2022, Alekperov served as president of Lukoil, expanding the company from its roots into a global energy giant. This growth paralleled Russia's economic liberalization and the emergence of the oligarch class. His business skills and strategic moves during the privatization era allowed him to amass considerable wealth, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $28.7 billion as of March 2025, placing him among the richest people in Russia and the world.

Beyond his main business ventures, Alekperov invested in sectors like sports and luxury manufacturing. He once held a 36.8% stake in Spartak Moscow football club and owned the superyacht builder Heesen Yachts until 2022. He formed business partnerships with other well-known Russian businessmen, such as Leonid Fedun, who was also involved with Spartak Moscow. However, Alekperov's international business activities faced significant restrictions after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand imposed sanctions against him as part of a broader international response to Russian military actions.

Before Fame

Growing up in Baku during the Soviet era, Alekperov lived in an area heavily influenced by the petroleum industry, which was central to the region's economy. The Caspian Sea area had been producing significant amounts of oil since the late 19th century, and the Soviet government invested a lot in developing Azerbaijan's energy resources. This environment gave young Alekperov an early look at oil industry operations and the technical challenges involved in extracting and refining petroleum.

He studied at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University during a time when the Soviet Union was dealing with both technological progress and economic slowdown. The mix of engineering and economic training he got there became valuable when the Soviet system started moving towards market-based approaches in the 1980s and 1990s, opening up opportunities for people who understood both the technical and business sides of big industries.
