Biography
Vladimír Weiss was born on November 30, 1989, in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), into a family with a strong football background. He is the third member of his family to play for the Slovak national team at the senior level, following both his grandfather and his father, Vladimír Weiss Sr., who had a successful career in Slovak football. This family tradition made Weiss a unique figure in European football, carrying on a legacy spanning several decades.
Weiss developed as a winger and attacking midfielder, able to play on either side with speed and skill. He started in the youth leagues in Slovakia before drawing attention from international clubs. Early in his career, he joined Manchester City, part of the team during the club's early days with Abu Dhabi ownership, but did not make significant first-team appearances there. He later went on loan and eventually moved permanently to other clubs, including Málaga in Spain, Al-Gharafa in Qatar, Panathinaikos in Greece, and Legia Warsaw in Poland, among others, having a career that included several countries and leagues.
Internationally, Weiss earned his first senior cap in 2009 and made 77 appearances for Slovakia, scoring 8 goals between 2009 and 2022. He was part of the Slovak team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the country's first-ever World Cup finals appearance. Slovakia reached the round of sixteen before being knocked out by the Netherlands. Weiss also played in multiple UEFA European Championships, becoming one of the standout Slovak players of his time.
Later in his career, Weiss returned to Slovakia to play for Slovan Bratislava, one of the country's top clubs, where he finished his professional playing career. His retirement closed a career that, although involved in various clubs, was marked by steady international contribution to Slovakia. He is known as the third Vladimír Weiss in the national team's history, highlighting the deep football connections in his family.
Before Fame
Growing up in Bratislava in the 1990s, Vladimír Weiss was surrounded by football from an early age. His father, Vladimír Weiss Sr., was a notable figure in Slovak football, giving the younger Weiss a great environment to train and sharpen his skills as a winger with natural speed and a knack for scoring. Slovakia had just started standing on its own in the football world after Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993, and the country was working hard to make a name for itself in Europe during Weiss's youth.
His talent was spotted early, catching the eye of Manchester City, who signed him as a young player. Although he didn't end up with a lasting first-team career there, it was a big early step that introduced him to top-level football facilities and training. His journey then took him through several European leagues until he became a dependable international player for Slovakia.
