Biography

Vladimír Weiss was born on September 22, 1964, in Bratislava, then part of Czechoslovakia. He became a professional footballer in the 1980s, making a significant impact in the Czechoslovak First League mainly with Inter Bratislava, where he made over 100 league appearances. His solid performances at the club level led to his recognition internationally, and he represented Czechoslovakia 19 times, scoring one goal. The peak of his playing career was at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, where he played as part of the Czechoslovak team.

After the peaceful split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Weiss adjusted to the new football scene by briefly playing in the Czech First League with Petra Drnovice before heading back to Slovakia. He played for several Slovak clubs, including Košice, Dunajská Streda, and Petržalka. He also represented the new Slovak national team, earning 12 caps and scoring one goal. His international career, spanning both Czechoslovakia and Slovakia, made him one of the select players who connected the two footballing histories of the former federation.

Weiss moved into management at the beginning of the 2000s and quickly made a name for himself as a skilled coach in Slovakia. One of his early achievements was in 2005, when he led Artmedia Petržalka to the Slovak league title and guided the team through the UEFA Champions League qualifiers to the group stage, a rare accomplishment for a Slovak club manager. He returned to Petržalka after coaching in Russia with Saturn Moscow Oblast and won a league and cup double in the 2007–08 season.

In 2008, Weiss became the head coach of the Slovak national team, aiming to lead the country to its first FIFA World Cup as an independent nation. He succeeded, taking Slovakia to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the team got past the group stage before being knocked out in the round of sixteen. Weiss became one of the few people to participate in a FIFA World Cup as both a player and a head coach. He resigned in 2012 after failing to qualify for the next major tournament.

After leaving the national team, Weiss managed Slovan Bratislava, then moved to Kazakhstan to coach FC Kairat, where he spent three years and won the Kazakhstan Cup twice. He then led the Georgia national team from 2016 to 2020, coming close to qualifying for UEFA Euro 2020 but just missing out. Weiss then returned to the Slovak First Football League long-term, signing with Slovan Bratislava. He is also the father of Vladimír Weiss Jr., a professional footballer with his own club and international career.

Before Fame

Growing up in Bratislava in the 1960s and 1970s, Vladimír Weiss was immersed in a Czechoslovak world where football was a big deal. The Czechoslovak First League was one of the tougher domestic competitions in Eastern Europe then, producing players who often played in European club competitions and international tournaments. Weiss emerged from this scene and became a professional in the 1980s, a time when Czechoslovak football held a strong international reputation after the national team's runner-up finishes in the 1934 and 1962 World Cups and their win at the 1976 UEFA European Championship.

His rise to prominence was due to consistent performances at the club level with Inter Bratislava, where he made over 100 league appearances, showing both his durability and skill. This track record, rather than any single defining moment, secured his place on the Czechoslovak national team and eventually earned him a spot in the squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
