Biography

Walter Julián Martínez Ramos (28 March 1982 – 11 August 2019) was a Honduran professional footballer, known for playing mainly as a striker, though he also took on a midfield role throughout his career. Born in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, Martínez was a key figure in Honduran football during the 2000s and 2010s. He spent most of his club career with Honduras's top two teams, Club Deportivo Olimpia and Fútbol Club Motagua, both located in Tegucigalpa. His ability to play in different positions made him a valuable player for both his club and the national team. Martínez played for the Honduras national football team during a time when the country was doing relatively well internationally. His career overlapped with Honduras's qualification for the FIFA World Cups in 2010 in South Africa and 2014 in Brazil. While the exact number of matches and goals he achieved remains part of the larger history of Honduran football, he was regularly chosen to represent his country in important matches. At the club level, Martínez played for Olimpia, founded in 1912, and Motagua, established in 1928, two of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Honduran football. His career with these clubs put him at the heart of Honduras's biggest football rivalry, known as the Clásico. Martínez passed away on 11 August 2019 in New York City at the age of 37, marking the end of a career that coincided with a successful era in Honduran football.
