Biography
Xavier Hernández Creus, born on 25 January 1980 in Terrassa, Catalonia, Spain, is a former professional footballer and current football manager who is often seen as one of the best midfielders in football history. Known as Xavi, he made a name for himself with his incredible passing skills, understanding of the game, and talent for controlling the pace of matches, which few have matched. He holds the record as the all-time top assist provider for Spain in the UEFA Champions League with 30 assists and is one of the few players to have made over 1,000 professional career appearances.
Xavi joined Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, at age 11. He made his first-team debut at age 18 against Mallorca in August 1998, starting a highly successful club career. During his time at Barcelona, he played 767 official matches — a club record later broken by Lionel Messi — and scored 85 goals. Alongside Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, and under manager Pep Guardiola, Xavi was part of a midfield trio known for the tiki-taka style of play. From 2008 to 2015, the trio contributed to five La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey titles, and three UEFA Champions League titles, including two trebles in 2008–09 and 2014–15. He was also the first Barcelona player to play 150 combined matches in European and FIFA Club World Cup competitions.
In 2015, Xavi left Barcelona for Al Sadd in Qatar, where he won six trophies before retiring in 2019. He then became a manager, starting at Al Sadd before returning to Barcelona as head coach in November 2021. His time as a manager at Barcelona included winning the 2022–23 La Liga title, but he left the role in 2024.
Internationally, Xavi played 133 times for Spain and was a key figure during the country's most successful footballing period. He won the FIFA World Youth Championship with Spain in 1999 and earned a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was part of the team that won UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2012 — three back-to-back major international tournaments. He was named Player of the Tournament at UEFA Euro 2008 and was in the Team of the Tournament for both the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Outside of football, Xavi received the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in 2012 with his Spanish teammates, recognizing their impact on Spanish sports. He has also been awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Sports Merit and the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit, highlighting the wide-ranging recognition he has received at the highest levels in Spain.
Before Fame
Xavi grew up in Terrassa, an industrial city near Barcelona, in a family with football in its veins—his father, Joaquín Hernández, was a professional footballer. From a young age, Xavi had a unique understanding of the game that made him stand out from other kids, relying on intelligence and skill rather than physical strength. At 11, he joined La Masia, Barcelona's famous youth academy, which had already trained a generation of technically skilled players who fit the club's unique style.
His growth at La Masia happened during a time when Spanish football was starting to focus seriously on technical, possession-focused play with young players. By the time Xavi made his senior debut at 18 in 1998, he was well-versed in the positional and technical skills that would shape his career. During his early years in Barcelona's first team, he worked hard to secure his spot in a competitive lineup. It wasn't until the mid-2000s, as Guardiola's influence began to change the club, that Xavi became the central figure of one of the most impactful club teams in recent times.
