Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both advanced through the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League knockout rounds to reach the final at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid. It was Tottenham's first ever Champions League final appearance, while Liverpool were appearing in consecutive finals after losing to Real Madrid in 2018.
Played on 1 June 2019, Liverpool won 2–0 with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty after just 106 seconds — one of the fastest goals in final history — followed by a late strike from substitute Divock Origi in the 87th minute. The match was also the first Champions League final to deploy the video assistant referee system.
Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup, earning entry to the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, both of which they subsequently won. Their reserved Champions League group stage berth was reallocated to Red Bull Salzburg, as Liverpool had already qualified through their Premier League position.
