Two minutes after takeoff from Taipei Songshan Airport, the crew reported an engine failure on one engine. After the aircraft climbed to 1,630 ft, the crew mistakenly shut down the remaining functional engine, leaving the ATR 72-600 with no thrust and unable to maintain flight.
On 4 February 2015, TransAsia Airways Flight 235 lost altitude, banked sharply left, clipped a taxi on the Huandong Viaduct and struck the viaduct structure itself before plunging into the Keelung River approximately 5 km from the departure airport, with 58 people aboard.
Forty-three of the 58 people on board died; 15 survived with injuries, and two additional persons in the taxi were hurt. The crash was TransAsia Airways' second fatal ATR accident within seven months, intensifying scrutiny of the airline's safety standards and crew training procedures.
