Biography

John Patrick Amama Mbabazi was born on January 16, 1949, in Mparo, Rukiga, Uganda. He attended Kigezi College Butobere and later studied at Makerere University. He completed his legal training at the Law Development Centre, which set the stage for his career in law and politics.

Mbabazi became a key political player during Uganda's challenging years from 1972 to 1986, actively participating in the fight against successive authoritarian governments. As a founding member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), he played a major role in forming the political organization that eventually brought Yoweri Museveni to power in 1986. His work in the resistance movement made him one of the main figures in Uganda's political change during this time.

After the NRM's win, Mbabazi had a successful career within the party and government. He served as the Member of Parliament for Kinkiizi West in Kanungu District from 1996 to 2016, representing his constituents for twenty years. His time in parliament came with various ministerial roles, leading to his appointment as Uganda's ninth Prime Minister on May 24, 2011, under President Museveni.

As Prime Minister, Mbabazi handled government operations during a time of economic growth and regional issues. His term lasted until September 19, 2014, when political tensions within the NRM led to his removal. His falling out with President Museveni and the party caused his exit from key positions and ultimately his departure from the NRM.

In 2016, Mbabazi decided to run against Museveni for the presidency as an independent candidate after forming the Go Forward political movement. His campaign was a significant change in Ugandan politics, as he, one of the NRM's founders, challenged the party he helped start thirty years ago. Though he did not win, his run highlighted changes in Uganda's political opposition and marked the end of his twenty-year parliamentary career representing Kinkiizi West.

Before Fame

Growing up in Rukiga in the 1950s and 1960s, Mbabazi saw Uganda shift from British colonial rule to independence in 1962. His education at Kigezi College Butobere, one of the top secondary schools in the region, gave him opportunities that were rare for most Ugandans at the time. The political turmoil after independence, especially under Idi Amin's regime starting in 1971, influenced his generation's participation in resistance movements.

In post-independence Uganda, many future political leaders were drawn to the legal profession since lawyers often stood up for constitutional governance and human rights during authoritarian periods. Mbabazi studied law at Makerere University and the Law Development Centre at a time when educated Ugandans increasingly opposed military dictatorships, setting the foundation for his later involvement in armed resistance movements that defined his early political career.
