Biography
Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a Ugandan lawyer and politician who made history as the first woman to be Speaker of Uganda's Parliament, serving from 2011 to 2021. Born in 1956, Kadaga has spent much of her career in public service and legal practice, becoming one of Uganda's most notable female political figures. Her ten years as Speaker made her the third-highest-ranking official in Uganda's government, following the President and Vice President. During her career, Kadaga has been recognized for advocating women's rights and gender equality, often pushing for laws and policies that support women and marginalized groups in Uganda. Her legal background helped her lead the parliament, where she managed many legislative sessions and guided crucial national discussions. As Speaker, she facilitated the passage of significant legislation and upheld parliamentary procedures during challenging political times. Kadaga's political career has lasted several decades, during which she has seen and been part of Uganda's changing democratic processes. Her role as Speaker required her to stay neutral while encouraging debate among parliament members from various political parties and viewpoints. Before Fame
Rebecca Kadaga grew up in Uganda shortly after it gained independence, a time of building political institutions and legal frameworks in the country. She chose to study law during a period when not many women in East Africa pursued legal careers. By doing so, she was in a position to help shape Uganda's legal system and democratic institutions. During the 1970s and 1980s, her formative years, Uganda experienced political turmoil, highlighting the need for strong legal and political leadership to ensure national stability and progress.
