Biography
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was born on August 15, 1944, in Ntungamo, Uganda, while it was under British colonial rule. He attended the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to study political science and founded the University Students' African Revolutionary Front, showing early leadership in anti-colonial movements. He also studied at Grinnell College in the United States and Makerere University in Uganda.
Museveni's political career started with military efforts against Uganda's authoritarian regimes. In 1972, he took part in a failed invasion against Idi Amin's dictatorship. After this, he set up the Front for National Salvation in 1973 and worked with Tanzanian forces during the Tanzania-Uganda War, which eventually brought down Amin's government. After the controversial 1980 general election, where his Uganda Patriotic Movement lost to Milton Obote amid claims of election fraud, Museveni led the opposition through the National Resistance Movement and initiated the Ugandan Bush War.
On January 30, 1986, after the key Battle of Kampala, Museveni became Uganda's president, a role he has held for over forty years. His government banned political parties from 1986 to 2005, creating what critics call an authoritarian system. Even with constitutional changes that allowed multi-party politics after a 2005 referendum, international observers have reported ongoing limits on political opposition and press freedom.
During his presidency, Museveni has been involved in several regional conflicts, including in the Rwandan Civil War and the First Congo War. His government has also carried out military actions against the Lord's Resistance Army insurgency in northern Uganda. While his leadership has brought some economic stability, it has also seen constitutional changes expanding presidential power and more restrictions on civil liberties, particularly affecting LGBTQ individuals. Museveni is married to Janet Museveni and has received several international awards, but his long tenure has made him one of the world's longest-serving non-royal leaders.
Before Fame
Museveni grew up during Uganda's shift from British rule to independence in 1962. In Ntungamo district, he saw the political chaos following independence, with different leaders coming to power and falling. While at the University of Dar es Salaam, his political beliefs were influenced by Tanzania's support for pan-African socialism and anti-colonial movements under Julius Nyerere.
The worsening political situation in Uganda during Idi Amin's violent dictatorship pushed Museveni into active resistance politics. Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979, marked by severe human rights abuses and economic collapse, led many Ugandan intellectuals and activists, including Museveni, to organize armed opposition movements from nearby countries.
