Bujar Faik Nishani (29 September 1966 – 28 May 2022) was an Albanian politician and jurist who was President of Albania from 2012 to 2017. Born in Durrës, he was the youngest person elected to the Albanian presidency, taking office at age 45. His presidency mainly focused on efforts for European integration and constitutional reforms to update Albania's legal framework and align it with EU standards.
Nishani's political career began in the post-communist era, during which he held several important governmental roles. He was Minister of Internal Affairs twice, from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2012, showing his expertise in security and administration. Between these terms, he was Minister of Justice from 2009 to 2011, where he worked on judicial reforms and modernizing the legal system.
His education was diverse, combining military, legal, and international studies. Nishani attended the Skanderbeg Military University, the University of Tirana, and the Naval Postgraduate School, giving him a unique view on domestic governance and international relations. This broad education was valuable during his presidency as Albania handled complex diplomatic relationships while working towards EU membership.
As president, Nishani strongly supported Albania's European integration and worked to strengthen the country's democratic institutions. His administration focused on constitutional reforms to improve the rule of law and judicial independence.
