Biography

Cristiano Ronaldo, born on February 5, 1985, in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, is a professional footballer widely seen as one of the greatest players ever. Known as CR7, he plays forward for the Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr and captains the Portugal national team. Over more than 20 years, he's scored over 970 official senior goals for club and country, becoming the top goalscorer ever. He's also made over 1,300 professional appearances, the most by any outfield player.

Ronaldo started his career at Sporting CP in Lisbon before joining Manchester United in 2003 at 18. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, he became one of the best attackers in the world. At Old Trafford, he won three straight Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. In the 2007-08 season, he scored 42 goals in all competitions, earning his first Ballon d'Or at 23. In 2009, Real Madrid signed him for a then-record fee of about 94 million euros, starting a new chapter in his career.

At Real Madrid, Ronaldo led the team back to European success. He became their all-time top scorer and helped them win four UEFA Champions League titles between 2014 and 2018, including the historic La Decima in 2014, ending a 12-year wait for another European title. He contributed to two La Liga titles, including the remarkable 2011-12 season when Madrid got 100 points. He won four more Ballon d'Or awards in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017, bringing his total to five. After leaving Madrid in 2018, he joined Juventus, winning two Serie A titles before returning to Manchester United in 2021. He then moved to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia in January 2023.

Internationally, Ronaldo has been just as successful. He holds the records for most international appearances with 226 caps and most international goals with 143, surpassing all other players in history. He led Portugal to victory at UEFA Euro 2016, their first major international trophy, and helped them win the first UEFA Nations League in 2019. He has scored in several UEFA European Championships, holding records for both goals and assists in that competition. His consistent performance across leagues, clubs, and generations keeps the debate alive about whether he is the greatest footballer of all time.

Before Fame

Cristiano Ronaldo grew up in Santo Antonio, a parish of Funchal on Madeira Island, in a working-class family. His father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, was a municipal gardener and kit man for a local football club, while his mother, Maria Dolores, worked as a cook. Ronaldo showed exceptional ability from a young age and joined the youth academy of local club Andorinha at age seven before moving to Nacional and then Sporting CP's academy in Lisbon at age 12. Moving to the mainland was a big sacrifice, as he left his family behind and reportedly cried from homesickness during his early days at Sporting.

At Sporting CP, his talent was clear, and he was one of the few players to represent the club's under-16, under-17, under-18, B team, and first team all within the same season. A pre-season friendly against Manchester United in 2003 made such an impact on United's players and coaching staff that they urged manager Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him immediately. Ferguson agreed, bringing Ronaldo to Old Trafford for about 12.24 million pounds. He was given the iconic number 7 shirt, previously worn by legends like George Best, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham, and from that point on, his rise to the top of world football took off quickly.
