Biography

Emmanuel 'Manno' Sanon was born on 25 June 1951 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and became the most celebrated Haitian footballer of his generation. As a striker, Sanon impressed with his technical skill and decisive finishing, gaining recognition beyond the Caribbean. He passed away on 21 February 2008 in Orlando, Florida, remembered for one of the most unforgettable moments in World Cup history.

Sanon made a name for himself locally by winning the Haitian national championship in 1971 with Don Bosco, a top club in the country. His performances there cemented his status as a key player for the Haiti national team. He was crucial in the team that won the 1973 CONCACAF Championship, earning Haiti a spot in the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany—Haiti's first and only time qualifying for the tournament.

During the 1974 World Cup, Haiti was in a group with Italy, Poland, and Argentina. In the opening match against Italy, Sanon received a pass from Philippe Vorbe and scored past goalkeeper Dino Zoff. This goal ended Zoff's 1,142-minute streak without conceding in international play, a record that made him one of the world's toughest goalkeepers. Even though Haiti lost all three group-stage games, Sanon scored two goals, a notable effort for a nation debuting at the World Cup.

After his international success, Sanon pursued a professional career in Europe, moving to Belgium. There he won the Belgian Cup with K. Beerschot V.A.C. in 1979 while playing in the Belgian Pro League, showing his skills were competitive at a high club level outside the Caribbean. Post-retirement, he turned to coaching, working to advance football in Haiti and in other areas.

In 1994, France Football magazine listed 'Les 100 Héros de la Coupe du Monde,' highlighting the best World Cup players from 1930 to 1990 based solely on their tournament performances. Sanon made the list, recognized for his impactful play at the World Cup. His two goals, achieved by a small nation against some of the world’s top teams, were considered a significant part of World Cup history.

Before Fame

Emmanuel Sanon grew up in Port-au-Prince during a time when football was a big part of Haitian culture and one of the few ways for talented young athletes to gain recognition at home and abroad. Haiti had a working domestic league, and clubs like Don Bosco provided opportunities for promising players to hone their skills in a competitive setting. Sanon came up through this system and was already playing at a high level by his teenage years.

By 1971, while still in his early twenties, Sanon had won the Haitian national championship with Don Bosco. This success put him on the radar for the national team, and over the next few years, he became one of its key players. His speed, positioning, and goal-scoring ability made him the natural focus of Haiti's attack, and his contributions were crucial to the national team's victory in the 1973 CONCACAF Championship, which earned the country a spot in the 1974 World Cup.
