Biography

Ewa Bożena Kopacz, originally Ewa Lis, was born on December 3, 1956, in Skaryszew, Poland. She is a physician and politician who became a key figure in modern Polish politics. She attended the 2nd General Secondary School named after Maria Konopnicka in Radom before earning a medical degree from the Medical University of Lublin. After graduation, she worked as a pediatrician and general practitioner before moving into public service.

Kopacz began her political career in 2001 when she joined Civic Platform, a centre-right party that would dominate Polish politics in the next decade. She was elected to the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament, and quickly climbed the ranks of her party. Her political career gained momentum when she became Minister of Health in 2007, a role she held until 2011. During this time, she managed major public health policies and built a reputation as a strong and effective leader.

In 2011, Kopacz made history by becoming the first woman elected as Marshal of the Sejm, a role she held until 2014. That year, she took over from Donald Tusk as Prime Minister of Poland, becoming the second woman to hold the position in Poland's history, after Hanna Suchocka (1992-1993). As Prime Minister, Kopacz also led Civic Platform from 2014 to 2016. Her time as head of government ended on November 16, 2015, when Beata Szydło succeeded her following a parliamentary election. During her leadership, she was recognized internationally and was ranked the 40th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine in 2015.

After her term as Prime Minister, Kopacz stayed active in both European and Polish politics. In 2019, she was appointed Vice-President of the European Parliament, a role she still holds. Throughout her career, she has earned numerous honors for her work in public service and international relations, including the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 2012, the Commander of the Order of Saint-Charles in 2012, the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, 1st Class in 2014, and the Pro Masovia Commemorative Medal.

Before Fame

Ewa Kopacz grew up in Skaryszew, a small town in Masovia, Poland, during the time of the Polish People's Republic. She went to the 2nd General Secondary School named after Maria Konopnicka in Radom nearby, where she got her basic education. After that, she attended the Medical University of Lublin, one of Poland's well-known medical training schools, and became a doctor, specializing in pediatrics.

Before getting into politics, Kopacz worked as a pediatrician and general practitioner, dealing directly with patients in a healthcare system that was changing a lot after Poland moved away from communist rule in 1989. Her experience in medicine gave her a practical background in public health, which influenced her policy-making when she joined the Sejm as a member of Civic Platform in 2001. Her move from clinical medicine to national politics was similar to others among her generation who wanted to shape Poland's institutions after communism from the inside.
