Biography

Girma Wolde-Giorgis was an Ethiopian politician, economist, and military officer who was the second President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 2001 to 2013. Born on December 28, 1924, in Addis Ababa, he rose to prominence during a pivotal time in Ethiopia's history, guiding the country through key political and economic changes during his twelve-year presidency.

Before becoming President, Girma had a varied career. His background in economics was crucial during Ethiopia's shift to a federal democratic system after the Derg military government fell in 1991. His military experience also helped him understand the complex security issues in the Horn of Africa during his time in office.

As President, Girma saw Ethiopia's ongoing development under the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front government. Although the Ethiopian presidency was mostly ceremonial, he played an important role in representing the country internationally and maintaining diplomatic relationships. His presidency coincided with significant economic growth in Ethiopia, as the country aimed to modernize its infrastructure and reduce poverty.

Girma's presidency lasted from 2001 to 2013, during which he saw Ethiopia become one of Africa's fastest-growing economies. He worked with Prime Ministers Meles Zenawi and Hailemariam Desalegn, keeping stability in the presidential office while the country faced various internal and regional challenges. His leadership was marked by a focus on national unity and diplomatic restraint.

After his term ended in 2013, Girma remained a respected elder in Ethiopian politics until he passed away on December 15, 2018, in Addis Ababa at the age of 93. He witnessed nearly a century of Ethiopian history and made significant contributions to the country's modern political development.
