Biography
John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez was born on July 22, 1960, in Bogotá, Colombia, and later moved to the United States. He became one of the most well-known Latino performers in American entertainment. He studied theater at several top schools, like the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and HB Studio, where he honed his skills for a career in various media. Leguizamo started out as a stand-up comedian in New York City, building his reputation through club performances before moving into movies and TV. He had his breakthrough in 1993 with significant roles in Super Mario Bros. as Luigi and in Carlito's Way as Benny Blanco. These roles showed he could handle both funny and serious parts. His career soared with his role as drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. During the 1990s and 2000s, Leguizamo was in many major films like Romeo + Juliet (1996), Summer of Sam (1999), and Moulin Rouge! (2001), showing his ability to work in different genres. He found success in voice acting as Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age movies and later as Bruno Madrigal in Disney's Encanto (2021). Besides acting, Leguizamo made important contributions to theater, writing and performing in several Broadway shows, including Freak, which won him a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999, making him the first Latino to win in that category. His theater work often explores Latino identity and history, mixing entertainment with cultural education and advocacy.
Before Fame
Leguizamo's early life was shaped by his family's move from Colombia to the United States, an experience that later influenced much of his work. He went to Murry Bergtraum High School in New York City and then pursued higher education at Long Island University, later opting for specialized acting programs. His formal training at places like the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute taught him classical acting techniques, while his life as a Latino immigrant gave him unique material for his stand-up comedy routines. The New York City comedy scene of the 1980s provided opportunities for new performers, and Leguizamo spent years polishing his skills in clubs and small venues, developing the observational humor and character work that would become his trademark.
