Biography
Joseph Ejercito Estrada, born Jose Marcelo Ejercito on April 19, 1937, in Tondo, Manila, is a Filipino politician and former actor. He was the 13th President of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001. Widely known as Erap, he built a career in both the film industry and politics. His presidency, although brief, is one of the most talked about and contentious in Philippine history.
Estrada started his entertainment career in the late 1950s and quickly became a well-known action film star in the Philippines, appearing in films for over 30 years. His on-screen image as a champion of the poor helped him in politics, and he entered the political arena in 1969 when he was elected Mayor of San Juan, a position he held until 1986. His time as mayor ended with the People Power Revolution, which removed Ferdinand Marcos from power. Despite supporting a coup attempt against the Aquino administration that followed, Estrada won a Senate seat in 1987, showing his ongoing popularity with voters.
His national reputation grew when he served as the Vice President of the Philippines under President Fidel V. Ramos from 1992 to 1998. Riding on his popularity, especially with lower-income Filipinos, Estrada won the 1998 presidential election by a wide margin. He took office on June 30, 1998. During his presidency, he declared an all-out war against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2000, capturing the group's headquarters and several camps. However, his time in office was marred by corruption allegations, leading to an impeachment trial in the Senate. In January 2001, the prosecution left the trial after senators voted not to open crucial evidence, leading to the Second EDSA Revolution. Estrada was ousted on January 20, 2001, and his vice president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, became president. He was the first sitting Asian head of state to be formally impeached.
After his removal, Estrada was arrested on April 25, 2001, on plunder charges. His supporters, mainly from poorer urban areas, held large protests and tried to storm Malacañang Palace in what became known as EDSA III. In 2007, he was convicted of plunder by the Sandiganbayan, a special anti-graft court, and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, President Arroyo granted him executive clemency later that year, allowing his release. Despite his conviction and legal issues, Estrada continued to be a strong political figure. He ran in the 2010 presidential election, coming in second. He later won the mayoral race for Manila in 2013 and served as the 26th Mayor of Manila until 2019, ending a political career that spanned five decades.
Before Fame
Joseph Estrada was born and grew up in Tondo, one of the oldest and most crowded parts of Manila. His upbringing was marked by urban poverty and strong community ties. He attended various schools like Mapúa University, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippine Women's University, and De La Salle University College of Liberal Arts, but didn't complete a degree. Leaving formal education behind, he turned to the Philippine film industry, which in the late 1950s was experiencing a boom in studio productions.
Estrada excelled in playing tough, street-smart characters in action films. These roles struck a chord with Filipino working-class audiences who saw their own struggles mirrored in him. His acting career spanned over three decades, making him a household name. The positive image he built in the films helped pave the way for his political career. Moving into local government in 1969 was a natural step from the public image he had established on screen.
