Biography

Ketevan "Katie" Melua, a British singer-songwriter born in Georgia, found great commercial success in the early 2000s with her jazz-influenced pop music. She was born on September 16, 1984, in Kutaisi, Georgia, and moved to Belfast and later to London during her childhood. Her music career took off with the help of composer Mike Batt, who spotted her talent and signed her to the independent Dramatico label.

Her first album "Call Off the Search," released in November 2003, quickly made her a significant figure in British music. The album topped the UK charts and sold 1.8 million copies in its first five months, a remarkable feat for a debut. She continued her success with her second album "Piece by Piece" in September 2005, which sold over four million copies, achieving quadruple platinum status. Her third album "Pictures" came out in October 2007, keeping her popularity strong.

Within three years of her debut, Melua was the best-selling female artist in the UK and the top-selling female artist in Europe, showing her wide international appeal. Her mezzo-soprano voice allowed her to handle both gentle ballads and more intricate jazz-inspired songs with skill. Her music, which mixes pop, jazz, and folk, is both appealing and sophisticated, attracting a broad audience.

By 2008, the Sunday Times Rich List reported that Melua had a fortune of £18 million, making her the seventh-richest British musician under 30. This success came not only from album sales but also from her ability to sustain her career through various income sources. Her achievements went beyond just sales, as she received significant awards like the European Cultural Award in 2021 and the Order of Honour, recognizing her contributions to music and cultural ties between Georgia and the UK.

Before Fame

Melua's rise in music was influenced by her multicultural background and formal music education. After moving from Georgia to the UK, she went to Nonsuch High School for Girls and then the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, where many successful British musicians have studied. Her experience at the BRIT School gave her technical skills and industry connections important for her future success.

In the early 2000s, the UK music scene was filled with manufactured pop groups and reality TV stars, leaving a gap for genuine singer-songwriters with real talent. Melua was discovered by composer Mike Batt, known for his work with classical crossover artists, which set her up well to meet the demand for sophisticated pop music that appealed to both younger audiences and older listeners looking for something different from mainstream pop.
