Laureano Bisan-Etame Mayer, or Lauren, was born on January 19, 1977, in Londji I, Cameroon. His parents were refugees from Equatorial Guinea. He has both Cameroonian and Spanish nationality because he moved to Spain when he was young, where he grew up and honed his football skills. His full name highlights his African roots and his life in Spain, shaping him into a unique footballer of his time in Europe.
Lauren started his professional career with Sevilla in Spain, first making his mark as a right midfielder before switching to the right-back position, which defined his career. His performances in Spain drew interest from English clubs, and in 2000, he joined Arsenal under manager Arsène Wenger. At Arsenal, he was a key player in one of the most famous teams in English football history. He won the FA Cup and the Premier League and was part of the team that went an entire Premier League season unbeaten in 2003-2004, earning the name 'The Invincibles.'
Lauren stayed with Arsenal until 2007, playing in over 150 games for the club in all competitions. Known for his solid defense and ability to push forward, he fit perfectly into Wenger's attacking full-back role. After Arsenal, he moved to Portsmouth and won the FA Cup in 2008, as the team surprised many by defeating Cardiff City in the final. He also played for other English clubs in the latter part of his career.
Internationally, Lauren played for Cameroon during a successful time for the national team. He was part of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002 and also took home an Olympic Gold Medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics with the Cameroon team. These victories made him one of the most successful Cameroonian footballers of his time, contributing to a golden era for the country's football.
Lauren retired from professional football with an impressive list of achievements at both club and international levels. Born in Africa and developed as a player in Spain before reaching his peak in England, his career reflects the growing global nature of the sport during the late 1990s and 2000s.
Before Fame
Lauren was born in Londji I, Cameroon, to parents who had fled from Equatorial Guinea. Growing up, his family moved to Spain, which opened up opportunities for him in Spanish football. During the 1980s and 1990s, Spain’s football scene was growing stronger, and Lauren took advantage of the infrastructure and coaching available. This experience helped him adapt to the tactical style of European football while still being eligible to play for Cameroon at the international level.
He progressed through the Spanish football system and ended up at Sevilla, where he started making a name for himself professionally. In the late 1990s, more African players were making their mark in Europe’s top leagues.
