Biography
Meseret Defar Tola, born on November 19, 1983, in Addis Ababa, is an Ethiopian long-distance runner and one of the top middle-distance athletes of the 2000s and 2010s. She focused on the 3,000 and 5,000 meters events, making a big name for herself in both indoor and outdoor competitions. Her accomplishments include two Olympic gold medals in the 5,000 meters, multiple world records, and an unmatched streak in indoor contests.
Defar started her Olympic success by winning gold in the 5,000 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics. She then took home a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and reclaimed the gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She showed similar success at the World Championships, with silver in 2005 in Helsinki and gold in 2007 in Osaka, placing her among Ethiopia's top distance runners alongside other renowned athletes.
Her world record feats were outstanding. In 2006, Defar set a new world record in the 5,000 meters and bettered it in 2007, though Tirunesh Dibaba broke her record in 2008. In 2007, she achieved a remarkable feat in Brussels, Belgium, becoming the first woman to run two miles in under nine minutes, clocking in at 8:58.58, which improved the world record by 11 seconds, showing her great range and speed.
Defar shone in indoor competitions, where she held world records in the 5,000 meters, 3,000 meters, and two-mile run. Her dominance in the indoor 3,000 meters was unmatched, winning four gold medals in a row at the IAAF World Indoor Championships from 2004 to 2010. This long-term success underscored her consistency and skill in indoor settings. Defar also did well at continental and junior levels, capturing two titles at the All-Africa Games, four medals at the African Championships, and two golds at the World Junior Championships.
In 2014, Defar decided to step back from competitive running to start a family, putting her hugely successful career on pause. Although she planned to return to competition in 2015, she did not take part in the World Championships in Beijing that August. Her career shows the heights that can be reached in distance running and the personal choices elite athletes face in balancing professional success with family life.
