Biography

Nikanor "Nika" Melia, a Georgian politician, was born on December 21, 1979, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He studied at Oxford Brookes University, earning a master's degree in International Relations. This education later influenced his political career and views on Georgia's foreign policy.

Melia started his political career with the United National Movement (UNM), the party founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili. He was a Member of Parliament representing the UNM from 2016 to 2019 and again from 2020 to 2021. While in Parliament, he became known for openly opposing the ruling Georgian Dream party's policies and approach to governance.

In 2017, Melia briefly served as Mayor of Tbilisi, marking a rare moment of executive power for the opposition UNM during the Georgian Dream government's rule. As mayor, he focused on urban development projects and addressing municipal governance issues in the capital city.

Melia's prominence grew when he became Chairman of the United National Movement, making him one of Georgia's leading opposition figures. In this role, he has been a vocal critic of the perceived decline in democracy under the Georgian Dream government. As leader of the UNM, he coordinates opposition activities, organizes protests, and represents the party in talks with the ruling party and international mediators. His political actions have sometimes led to legal challenges, highlighting the divided nature of Georgian politics in the years following the Rose Revolution.

Before Fame

Growing up in post-Soviet Tbilisi during the 1980s and 1990s, Melia experienced Georgia's shift from a Soviet republic to an independent nation, including the civil wars and economic struggles that came with early independence. His choice to study international relations at Oxford Brookes University showed the hopes of many young Georgians who wanted Western education and viewpoints, especially with the country's pro-Western focus after the Rose Revolution in 2003.

Melia's journey into politics was influenced by Georgia's move toward democracy and the reform goals of the United National Movement. His group of Georgian politicians came into prominence when the country was working on joining European and Atlantic organizations, and many young professionals went into politics driven by the goal of strengthening democratic institutions and furthering Georgia's Western ties.
