Biography

Mahiaddin bin Md. Yasin, better known as Muhyiddin Yassin, was born on May 15, 1947, in Muar, Johor. He was Malaysia's eighth Prime Minister from March 2020 to August 2021, guiding the country through the COVID-19 pandemic. After graduating from Universiti Malaya, he started his career in Johor's public service, working in various state-owned companies before moving into politics.

Muhyiddin's political journey started in 1978 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Pagoh, a position he's held since 1995. Early in his career, he served as the parliamentary secretary to the minister of foreign affairs, deputy minister of federal territories, and deputy minister of trade and industry. His leadership in Johor UMNO led to his role as Menteri Besar of Johor from 1986 to 1995, boosting his reputation as an effective state administrator.

In 1995, he returned to federal politics, holding important ministerial roles such as Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, and Minister of International Trade and Industry. In 2009, Najib Razak appointed him Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education. As Education Minister, he changed the policy back to using Bahasa Malaysia for teaching science and mathematics in public schools. He also caused quite a stir by saying he was 'Malay first' rather than 'Malaysian first' in a political debate.

Muhyiddin's ties with UMNO soured when he openly criticized the 1MDB scandal, leading to his removal from the Deputy Prime Minister role in 2015. He then co-founded Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) and joined the Pakatan Harapan coalition, which unseated UMNO in the 2018 general election. After the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed in February 2020, Muhyiddin became Prime Minister by forming the Perikatan Nasional coalition. His time in office focused on managing Malaysia's COVID-19 response, which included imposing several Movement Control Orders and implementing economic stimulus plans. He stepped down in August 2021 after losing support in parliament during ongoing political turmoil. He is married to Noorainee Abdul Rahman and has received awards, including the Panglima Setia Mahkota and an Honorary Doctorate from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2014.

Before Fame

Muhyiddin Yassin grew up in Muar, Johor, during Malaysia's early independence when the nation was developing its political institutions and identity. After studying at Universiti Malaya, he chose a career in public service instead of the private sector, following the era's focus on building the nation through government work. His early career in Johor's state administration matched with Malaysia’s rapid economic growth in the 1970s, a time when the country was implementing the New Economic Policy to increase Malay involvement in the economy.

The political landscape of the late 1970s, dominated by UMNO and its emphasis on Malay unity, set the stage for Muhyiddin's entry into politics. He was elected as MP for Pagoh in 1978 when Malaysia was reinforcing its federal system, and young leaders in UMNO were being prepared to advance the party's goals of economic modernization while keeping Malay political leadership.
